What’s Mutagenesis?
Mutagenesis is a multi-media project set in the aftermath of an apocalyptic virus. It originated as a homebrew setting for the tabletop game Mutants and Masterminds. Since then, the project has expanded to include stories, videos, and future interactive material.
What’s the Premise?
The Short Version
Mutants, husks, and people with superpowers were all created by a virus that collapsed society and brought about the apocalypse. Now the world is in the process of rebuilding as different local and regional organizations fight for power. While some want to cure the virus and some want to embrace and control it, a single question is universal: where did it come from? Perhaps the answer lies in a cryptic and lavishly dressed horned skeleton, rumored curse anyone he meets.
The Long Version
In the year 2082, the six nations were plagued with an extremely potent infection that people began to call the Genesis. Victims of this plague went into a comatose state while their bodies mutated.
The result was the creation of..
Husks
The living dead and most diverse of all monsters. 90% of them were once living creatures, be it animals, people, or even some plants.
The most common type are…
Hollowed Husks
The soulless shells of people who died sick. Easily recognizable by their long claws and see through skin. Not much of a threat alone, but can easily overpower people in large hoards.
They have a feud with the second type of monsters…
Mutants
These creatures are much more dangerous, mainly because they have some intelligence to match with their instinct. They emerge from those that are infected with the virus and end up deformed horribly, granting them usually enhanced abilities at the cost of most of their humanity.
These creatures come in 3 different main classes each with stronger mutants in them then the previous.
The most common type are…
Brute Mutants
- Built like tanks
- Once they begin charging they are extremely hard to stop
Spike Mutants
- Are highly aggressive
- Use the extra spike on shoulder blades to stab their victims
Armored Mutants
- Are blind
- Perfect for taking takings, not the best attackers.
These three tend to travel in groups instead of standing alone. They will always attack husks no matter the danger the husks pose to them. This includes if the husks are in the process of fighting the final mutated group…
The Powered
Either the luckiest or unluckiest depending on who you ask. These people had their DNA altered, which allowed for the awakening of genes that granted them unique abilities.
These abilities present in many ways such as..
- Momentum Manipulation
- Mind Control
- Fire Creation
- Shapeshifting
Some consider them a curse to be eliminated, because they make the world divided. Others consider them a blessing, doing immoral research to make more powered people they can control.
There is often a fine line between the good guys and the bad guys … or the heroes and the villains. However, one thing is sure… these powered people, or as most say The Powered, hold most of the power in this world. They are the key to defeating these monsters and protecting the normal folks.
Four Years Later
Husks, Mutants, and The Powered are everywhere. The world has been left in ruins and society has collapsed. In the wake of these ruins, different groups have formed to try and regain control over the anarchy.
They include…
The Commoner’s Alliance
A large civilian alliance who seek to bring a sense of normalcy back to the world.
This group may seem underwhelming due to the lack of powered people that join. However, they do far more than any powered person possibly could. Perhaps the largest organization in the world and can be found everywhere. These are the unlucky people who did not get powers, but also the incredibly lucky ones that did not turn into mutants or worse.
They play the important role of actually rebuilding the nations. This is incredibly difficult due to the persistent attacks, but none the less, the people of The Commoner’s Alliance are doing everything they can to return the world back to normal.
The Students of Sawkenna
A localized school for heroes located in the nation of Cirania.
The Students of Sawkenna are housed in the abandoned campus of The University of Sawkenna. Three of the university’s former students, Jeremiah, Daran, and Boydon, have dedicated themselves to helping people understand and learn to control their powers. Currently, they are fairly small. But they one day wish to extend their reach to other nations via new branches. Their main goal is to remove the threat of the virus through the acceptance and abilities of The Powered.
Hunter’s League
Highly skilled mercenaries who take on bounties dangerous to even their veteran members.
They specialize in not only killing their targets, but capturing as well, which makes up a large part of their core principles. People who wish to gain power and lots of training… at the risk of death… typically join the Hunter’s League. They operate in every nation except one, located east of the Ebrait deserts.
Each and every member dreams to one day be as strong as their top ranked Hunter: Reaper, a scythe-wielding, cloaked and masked man who has a record of successfully completing every bounty he has taken…except for one.
Members follow a strict code. But one rule stands above all others, “Don’t attack your fellow Hunter“.
The Wingers
A large syndicate based mainly in the East Coast of Cirania.
They present themselves as the logical successors to the former government by capitalizing off of fear and trust to gain influence. But their true agenda lies in creating a new global order. Despite this, they generally dislike the act of killing to show strength.
They view the virus and its creations as a tool to be utilized for their agenda, and seek to weaponize it.
The Wingers are divided into four branches…
The Clawed Wings
Security detail who handle internal and external conflicts.
The smallest, but most feared branch, as their leader is incredibly unnerving with the ability to nullify powers.
The Port Wings
Brokers who create and foster trade partnerships around the world, aside from the region east of the Ebrait deserts.
The most publicly renowned branch, their influence has increased drastically since the reign of their current leader: Talis Krel, the “Portal Master” and cunning young genius.
The Shredder Wings
Scientists who research the virus via sample testing and field work.
They are led by an extremely wealthy benefactor who funds the rest of the organization, but many have never met him. He is rumored to host elegant parties with a guest list of only the most select members and associates.
The Arboard Wings
A secretive group who handle “community outreach”.
Not much is know about the group or its members, even among the organization as a whole.
Aside from the different organizations and their potential conflict, another defining feature has emerged…
A Cryptic Legend
Since the origin of the virus, a mysterious individual has been spotted across the country of Cirania.
Neither man nor mutant, not monster nor husk.
Horns like a devil, a skeletal frame, and a dapper black suit and tie.
Survival is futile, deep in the woods.
For once you see him, your fate is a decaying corpse.
This is known as the Curse of Necros. This creature, whatever he maybe, is believed to be the origin behind husks and maybe even the virus overall, as wherever he is said to appear, a wave of husks follow.
